Zen Count — two-level tags with the ace at −1
Zen Count is Snyder’s two-level system that keeps the ace in the main count at −1. Fours, fives, and sixes are +2; tens are −2. You get Hi-Lo-like betting correlation (.96) with a clear jump in playing efficiency (.63 vs .51) and no ace side count. That is why Anvil Table treats Zen as the default “step up from Hi-Lo” among the multi-level systems. True count is still running count divided by decks remaining. Insurance defaults to true count +5 here, not +3 — the ace is already in the count, so the insurance threshold sits higher.

Why you would pick Zen Count over Hi-Lo
Almost the same betting power, better playing information, twice the tag magnitude on several ranks.
The clean upgrade from Hi-Lo if you can handle ±2 tags and do not want a side count.
Weaknesses
Level-2: dropping a +2 five is a bigger error than dropping a Hi-Lo +1. Insurance index is not the Hi-Lo number; do not mix them.

FAQ
Should I learn Zen or Hi-Lo first?
Hi-Lo first. Zen is the next step once the true-count division is automatic. Anvil Table can switch systems on the same shoe so you can compare.
